UPDATE: 50-acre fire east of Julian now 100% contained

UPDATE (May 2, 2:30 p.m.): Cal Fire says the Felipe Fire was 100% contained by 12:45 p.m. Friday. The agency wrote on X that fire crews have left the scene.


UPDATE (May 2, 7:55 a.m.): The containment of the Felipe Fire was increased to 80%, according to City News Service reporting.


UPDATE (May 1, 10:26 p.m.): Cal Fire officials said the Felipe Fire just east of Julian was 50% contained after crews stopped the fire's forward rate of spread.

Officials stated crews were "making good progress on the fire" as of late Thursday night.

Crews were slated to remain at the scene through Friday morning to put out any potential hotspots and increase containment.


SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Cal Fire says a firefighter was injured after responding to a 50-acre brush fire east of Julian Thursday afternoon. The firefighter was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

State Route 78 is back open after the fire briefly closed it in both directions.

Firefighters responded to the fire near SR-78 and San Felipe Road at around 2 p.m. A little before 2:30 p.m., Cal Fire said on X the fire was 15 acres large and had a moderate rate of spread "with the potential to be an extended attack incident."

Caltrans San Diego also tweeted about the fire, posting at 2:12 p.m. that all lanes of SR-78 were closed in both directions just east of San Felipe Road.

By 4 p.m., the fire grew to 50 acres and was burning at a slow rate.

Cal Fire says they're working on steep rocky terrain but are making good progress. The fire is 10% contained as of 6:45 P.M. Thursday.
